Process Art Workshop

I have to begin by saying what a delight it was to see the incredible creativeness the children showed in their designs for last week's Where Oliver Fits project. The children are given the materials for the project and then we step back and let them go. That is my favorite part -- to wait and watch and see what they'll be moved to create as their genius minds just soar. And soar they did!

The inspiration for this week's Process Art Workshop was the book Ish by Peter Reynolds. Ish is the story of a young boy Ramon who loves to draw, until one day his confidence is depleted when his brother makes fun of his drawing and he crumples it up and tosses it aside. His younger sister eventually teaches him that his artwork does not need to be perfect and he celebrates his unique view of the world again.

After being inspired by all of Ramon’s crumpled papers in the story, we made our own crumpled paper art. The children crumbled their papers and then painted the exposed areas with watercolors. Then they opened their papers, crumbled them again and continued painting with different colors. We also created crumpled paper art with markers.
